Job Summary

Department Purpose

Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owner/managed and Public-Private-Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. SHDS also provides student support and conference housing services to the campus and general community. For more information about SHDS visit our website at http://www.housing.ucdavis.edu.

The Facilities Services unit is one of six major units within the SHDS Department. Facilities Services oversees all the daily maintenance, major maintenance, preventive maintenance, custodial services, capital projects and painting for SHDS. Facilities Services encompass approximately 2.0 million square feet and over 100 residential, dining, and administrative buildings.

Job Summary

Student Housing & Dining Services (SHSDS) maintenance staff perform preventative maintenance and repairs on buildings managed by SHDS to maintain an excellent living and learning environment for our residents. Mechanics are expected to systematically maintain and proactively inspect buildings and department equipment; to respond to equipment failure, power outages and building flooding; and to perform mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and appliance work as appropriate for a generalist.

Customer service is a significant responsibility and requires a cooperative teamwork philosophy to create a working environment that stimulates the development of new services and innovative approaches to improve existing services.

Incumbents are expected to understand and enforce University policies and procedures, will be held accountable for meeting established expectations, and will be responsible for physical integrity and accountability for all the signed material equipment and assets.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Wear and maintain standard approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, hearing, and eye protection.
  • Wear and maintain respirator, protective suit, and all other PPE required by OSHA regulations for work in areas where VOC, asbestos, or lead-containing materials are found.
  • Work in restricted areas around large noisy equipment; climb ladders or stairs to top of machinery, crawl, stoop, bend, and work in close quarters or cramped conditions.
  • Operate and work from various types of lifts including scissor lifts and boom lifts. Tasks may be performed from ladders, lifts, portable scaffold or from above.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Successful completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services.
  • Work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present; specific hazards of the position include, but are not limited to, asbestos-containing insulation, gypsum-based materials and finishes, and adhesives; lead-containing paint and other surface treatments; paint solvents and petroleum distillates; mercury-containing fluorescent light tubes, PCB-containing ballasts, etc.
  • Work alone or in a team environment and within heavily populated spaces.
  • Valid CA driver's license required. Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. A copy of DMV record will be required as a final condition of employment.
  • If the successful applicant does not already have certifications to safely abate asbestos and lead-containing materials, they will be required to obtain such certifications as provided by the Department.
  • May be required to work a non-standard work week including one or both days of the weekend. Occasional overtime will be required. Will occasionally be asked to work during UC or national holidays. Vacation usage may be limited during peak workload periods. Will be required to work on-call.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:           

  • Experience performing maintenance in a commercial kitchen, including but not limited to knowledge of gas and electric ovens, grill tops, meat slicers, steam kettles, combi ovens and dish machines.
  • Experience in basic mechanical (HVAC), electrical and plumbing maintenance and repair tasks. Including skills to perform preventative maintenance on mechanical (HVAC), plumbing, electrical. and access control (lock/latch) systems.
  • Experience understanding and communicating technical data, mechanical and structural specifications, blueprints, schematics, diagrams and craft terminology to colleagues and vendors regarding repairs and building systems.
  • Customer service experience demonstrating the ability to complete work orders, answer customer questions, follow through on customer requests, and explain repair processes to resolve building system problems.
  • Experience with computers and typing skills to operate a personal computer, use email, and operate other software programs and mobile devices needed to perform job functions. In addition to math skills to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with trade shop safety regulations and procedures. Experience needed to use common hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Experience working successfully as part of a team, independently, or under direct supervision to complete renovations/repairs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Demonstrated skills to install, maintain and repair commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Demonstrated skills in electrical systems including line voltage up to 480 volts and equipment-based electronics. Troubleshooting control panels and electrical systems using multimeters and other electrical testing devises.
  • Demonstrated skills in preventative maintenance and or/repair of hydronic-based HVAC and refrigeration mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrating skills in plumbing systems installation and/or repair
