The main responsibilities of the Laboratory Assistant are to are to assist the Field Crops and Entomology Cooperative Extension Advisor in technical laboratory research activities which include laboratory processing of field collected insect and cotton samples. The laboratory assistant will work independently after training in setting up and operating research equipment, accurately identifying insects and separations from field collected samples, and accurately recording/collecting data. The Laboratory Assistant may help to set up and evaluate experiments and trials in the lab and the field. The assistant may also help in setting up equipment and material for extension events and provide occasional technical assistance for student workers.

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.

Pay Scale: $21.47/hour to $23.17/hour

Key Responsibilities:

80%

Process samples in laboratory obtained from field. Processing involves sorting through plant material, finding insects and using microscope to separate, identify, count and record numbers of various insect species that are mixed together in samples.

Develop data sheets as needed via excel software. 

Data entry in computer programs and verification of data accuracy.

Provide analysis data to supervisor in a variety of reports, write results in clear concise manner.

Assist/train student assistants with insect identification and sample processing techniques.

Ensure the laboratory equipment and supplies are maintained, keep records; order, store and dispense a limited variety of standard supplies for laboratory. Set up and maintain equipment such as fume hoods, fans, emergency lights, water drains and special fixtures; and assist in the assembly, testing and operation of laboratory equipment.

May help setting up and evaluating experiments and trials in the lab and the field. May also help in setting up equipment and material for extension events and perform other duties, as needed.

 

Requirements:

  • Coursework and basic understanding of the scientific principles behind research area.
  • Ability to use specialized lab and field equipment, with training.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks carefully and accurately.
  • Ability to use data collection and measurement software, as well as Excel and Word in order to detail the measurement.
  • Adequate visual acuity or corrected to see shapes, sizes and colors.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of the insects present in alfalfa. 

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
