Departmental Overview
The Innovative Genomics Institute is a joint effort between the Bay Area's leading scientific research institutions, UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, with affiliates at UC Davis, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Gladstone Institutes, and other institutions. They conduct world-class research, driven by the real possibility of using genome engineering to treat human diseases, end hunger, and respond to climate change.

Responsibilities
DNA/RNA Extraction:
- Utilizes commercial DNA and RNA extraction kits on samples where reagents are pipetted into samples in a specific order, centrifugation of samples, and ultimate resuspension of DNA/RNA in purified water.
Media Preparation:
- Understands the bacterial growth medium recipes that we currently use in our lab, the measurement and dilution of solid and liquid medium reagents into water, the autoclaving of these mixtures, and the proper storage of the completed and sterilized media.
Sample Organization, Indexing, and Storage:
- Understands different sample types entering the lab (e.g. microbial mixtures, purified DNA, and purified RNA).
- Applies unique labels based on a currently established lab sample labeling system.
- Stores/retrieves samples using an established laboratory sample index.
DNA/RNA Quantification:
- Understands liquid dilutions to dilute DNA or RNA into water and the use of a nanodrop spectrophotometer to quantify the concentration of DNA and/or RNA in these dilutions.
Required Qualifications
- Basic Biology (introductory college level).
- Basic Chemistry (introductory college level).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $21.38 - $23.06.
- This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
- This is a hybrid position, eligible for up to 25% remote capability.
