Hiring/Budgeted Salary or Hourly Range: The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $22.89 - $29.62/hr.

Full Hourly Range: The full hourly range for this position is $21.59 - $30.19/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Work Location: FM Building 439

Working Days and Hours: Mon - Fri 2:00am - 10:30am

Brief Summary of Job Duties: Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, performs a variety of custodial tasks and other related duties. Handles all heavy lifting and moving tasks, the moving of all furniture out of classrooms, offices, labs, and the replacement of all furniture. Required to perform custodial duties in zone, and campus-wide as necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • Less than 1 year experience performing a variety of unskilled manual tasks; and perform other related duties as required.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform a variety of unskilled manual tasks; and perform other related duties as required.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 100% Technical Operation, Skills & Knowledge - Required to provide custodial service to 30,000 SQF in an eight hour shift. In addition, required to cover open assignments and assists on more than one assignment during the shift when necessary. Performs all aspects of hard surface floor care, including resurfacing of wood and gym floors. Performs all aspects of carpet care, including spotting, surface cleaning and extraction. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in removal of difficult stains. Performs special project work as assigned (including floor work, recharge jobs, construction cleanups, cleaning of ventilation systems, equipment rooms, and air handling systems). Covers open assignments and assists on more than one assignment during the shift when necessary. Performs detail cleaning in any area as instructed by Assistant Superintendent. Cleans blinds, light fixtures, elevator interiors, tracks and front. Cleans doors, partition glass, showers, glass panels, inside and outside windows, polishes metal fixtures and handrails. Informs Assistant Superintendent of discrepancies noticed when covering route assignment and corrects such discrepancies as instructed. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves, masks, boots, etc., as required by the job. Responsible for security and campus lockup as needed. Locks unoccupied areas/offices after cleaning or completion of floor care. Uses all specialized equipment in accomplishment of cleaning tasks, including truck mount. Responsible for proper maintenance and storage of equipment. May haul, load and/or set up chairs, tables, podiums, flags and other items for special functions. Loads and unloads trucks to transport heavy equipment to work or storage sites. Performs routine checks of eyewash and emergency shower stations and relamp in areas reachable by eight foot ladder. Performs all power washing, graffiti cleanup, and large tasks that cannot be handled by Sr. Custodians. Assists in collection and distribution of keys in area. Maintains a functional awareness of the typical hazards of the work place as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at UCSB such as biohazards, radiation, chemicals, etc. Monitors work place safety on a daily basis. Follows established procedures for dealing with such potential hazards. Communicates with faculty, staff, and EH&S regarding safety violations. Complies with all UCSB and Physical Facilities safety regulations, correct chemical storage procedures, and uses personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by the job. Familiar with use of material safety data sheets for chemicals and materials used in custodial work. Responsible for security in buildings within area of responsibility. Reports suspicious circumstances, including questionable individuals to campus police. Establishes and maintains a positive and cooperative working relationship with members of department and campus community. Functions as a team player with supervisor, and other laborers to provide support to Senior Custodians. Maintains communication by portable radio and takes calls over radio in absence of supervisor. Assists in emergency response teams and cleanups. Participates in creating a strong customer service environment. Effectively performs in a service environment. Maintains proficiency at current levels and continually updates knowledge through appropriate courses, training seminars, publications, and contacts with others in the trade. Knowledge of correct chemical use and mixture. Knowledge of general custodial duties and floor restoration. Ability to operate vacuums, floor scrubbers, polishers and carpet steam extractors and truck mount unit. Ability to clean all different types of floor surfaces including rubberized tile, concrete, computer tile, resilient tile, ceramic tile, linoleum, fovo, cork floor, Spanish tile, pitted tile, mosaic tile, terrazzo, wood and parquet floors, all carpeted surfaces.
