Position Summary:   The UCI Law Clinics are part of the UCI Law experiential learning program. We offer a total of ten core clinical courses as a part of the graduation requirements for law students, including the Civil Rights Litigation Clinic, the Community and Economic Development Clinic, the Criminal Justice Clinic, the Domestic Violence Clinic, the Environmental Law Clinic, the Immigrant Rights Clinic, the Intellectual Property, Arts & Technology Clinic, the International Justice Clinic, and the Worker, Law, & Organizing Clinic. Although each of these clinics has its own faculty director, they function as one law firm. Operating as one firm, the clinics share staff, computing and IT services, a suite of offices, and a common work area on the third floor of the MPAA building. The Clinic Summer Attorneys will provide legal support for ongoing clinical matters/cases on a part-time basis during the summer months alongside student interns and clinic directors.

 

Applies professional concepts to provide a variety of pro bono legal services to community members and organizations. Requires broad knowledge of relevant legal disciplines, including, possibly, civil litigation, immigration, worker's rights, corporations, criminal defense, family/domestic violence, environmental, housing, international, IP/fair use, and other potential areas of law. Regularly works on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment and independence in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Works on highly confidential and sensitive matters. Clinic Summer Attorneys will provide legal services to clinic clients for ongoing clinical matters/cases during summer months (5/9/2024 to 8/21/2024). Additional responsibilities may include: • Conducting legal research and analysis for clinic cases; • Participating in litigation and making court appearances; • Filing of pleadings and briefs; • Leading and conducting discovery, and other fact finding; • Drafting policy advocacy materials; and • Meeting or speaking with clinic clients, potential clients, and partner organizations.

  The expected pay range for this recruitment is $61,100.00 - $72,500.00 (Annual Salary). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $61,100.00 - $107,100.00 (Annual Salary).

Required:  
  • At least 1 -3 years of relevant experience. 
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred for work with some clinics.
  • JD or other law degree from a State Bar-accredited or American Bar Association-approved law school
  • Ability to interpret a moderate variety of policies, laws and legal precedents and apply to each individual situation. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously. 
  • Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Moderate skills associated with conducting complex legal analysis, problem-solving and critical-thinking. 
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with diverse client group. 
  • Solid knowledge with computer applications, document sharing technology and research tools. Moderate skill in using Lexis, Nexus, Westlaw and / or other electronic legal databases, law library, people-search databases, standard office software. 
  • Writing moderately complex documents including editing and proofreading documents with close attention to details.
     
Preferred:  
  • Must be a member in good standing of a state bar. Membership in the State Bar of California may be required for work with some clinics
