The full salary range for this position is $74,300 - $134,500/yr. The budgeted salary range the University reasonably expects to pay is $74,300 - $99,480/yr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Plans, organizes and directs the operation of the COE Machine Shop. Supervises all users of the Machine Shop, including senior staff machinist, part-time machinist, part-time student employees and students. Schedules work, assigns job duties and provides instruction for safe work practice for all Shop tools as needed. Insures standard shop safety practices are followed. Maintains personnel records and initiates personnel actions in accordance with UC policies and procedures. Estimates job labor and materials costs for recharges. Purchases stock, tooling and capital equipment. Set up and fabricate precision parts and assemblies in common and exotic materials, including metal, plastic, wood, glass, ceramics, intermetallic composites, and parts with mathematically defined surfaces. Designs parts, laboratory equipment, and research apparatus using CAD/CAM software. Program and operate CNC milling machines, lathes and EDM machines. Consults and advises faculty, staff and students regarding engineering and fabrication considerations. Exhibits a high level of interpersonal communications skills required to facilitate the operation of the Machine Shop in a team-work environment. Provides excellent customer service to researchers, students and staff while maintaining the flexibility to support the changing needs of the Mechanical Engineering Program and College of Engineering.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience/training.
  • 7-9 years of fabrication and design experience; overall technical competence.
  • 4-6 years of reading blueprints and interpreting sketches.
  • Ability to teach others novel information in an effective, patient manner.
  • Effective, respectful, and clear communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and influence staff, providing effective direction and guidance.
  • Solid knowledge of CAD/CAM.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4-6 years of Machine Shop supervision.
  • Analytical and judgment skills needed to problem solve.
  • Ability to organize work efficiently.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

20% Machine Shop SupervisorPlans, organizes and directs the on-going operation of the Mechanical Engineering Machine Shop (Research and Student Shops), including long range planning. Oversees all users of the Shop including ~150 undergraduate students. Determines the need for maintenance work on equipment and facilities, plans and schedules the same. Continues to build and maintain a team working environment in the Shop, taking a lead role and participating in Machine Shop staff meetings. Estimates job labor and materials costs for recharges. Understands the principles of job costing, and keeps informed regarding the on-going operating expenses and income in the Shop recharge process. Purchases stock, tooling and capital equipment. Coordinates records of purchases, jobs and recharge billing with the Dean's Office, COE. Supervises: 1 senior level career staff machinist (LAB MECHN SR), and a part-time student employee. Assigns job duties, plans and schedules work, and ensures that safety practices are followed. Provides instruction, development and training as needed. Has a role in the selection and hiring of new Shop staff. Maintains some personnel records and initiates personnel actions in accordance with University policies and procedures and in consultation with the Assistant Dean for Administration.

70% Education and Programmatic Support - Supports Shop Education through assistance on shop related courses, and student work when needed. Trains students on machines and all equipment required by the mission of the college of engineering after they have taken the shop safety course. Maintains a safe and productive work environment for students and staff. Equipment includes machines in and around the machine shop including those located in the interior, the patio, the makerspace. Oversees that students have safely set-up machines and have a full understanding of how to use the tools safely. The equipment supported in the machine shop may change as the college of engineering program evolves over time. Demonstrates understanding on the safe use of all equipment. Understands and oversees engineering tests run in the patio of the shop, working with instructors to approve SOPs. Demonstrates a desire to serve students and the mission of the University.

10% Fabrication and Design - Acts as a technical consultant to researchers, staff and students. Discusses design and fabrication problems with faculty and researchers (including post-docs, graduate students and engineers). Communicates effectively with customers with varying levels of technical competence. Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, and other guides. Provides original and creative ideas for designs to expedite machining and improve operations. Requires insight into researchers' needs and an understanding of restrictions of the test environment in which the equipment will be operated. Designs and constructs components, laboratory equipment and research apparatus using CAD/CAM software. Performs all set-ups, programming, and operation of manual and computer-controlled machines, including CNC and EDMs to fabricate components for instructional and research labs in the College of Engineering. Independently produces work of the highest quality and accuracy requiring the skills of a superior-level machinist or toolmaker, requiring complex operations, close tolerances and fine finishes.
