Job Summary

The Social Worker I is part of a multi-disciplinary team providing services to inmates at the Sacramento County Main Jail or Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center. The Social Worker plans, organizes, and conducts a wide range of individual and group activities of a psychoeducational, social, cultural, or creative arts nature which will facilitate diagnosis, evaluation, planning and treatment of inmates receiving services from ACMH.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree from an accredited School of Social Work
  • Experience in a social service or healthcare setting (such as case management or social worker
  • Associate Social Worker License issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences Examiners within 90 days of hire
  • Must be able to pass and maintain the Sacramento Sheriff Department's Security Clearance
  • Knowledge and understanding of individual, child, and family development, human behavior and communication, the influence of culture and values in social work practice, psychotherapy, case management, and the relation between social work practice and medicine
  • Knowledge and skills in the areas of individual, group, and family therapy
  • Basic understanding of community resources
  • Demonstrated awareness of, and sensitivity to, dealings with cultural and socioeconomic diversity
  • Knowledge of child, elder abuse, and domestic violence reporting requirements, and other significant legislation and laws regulating social work practice (such as Tarasoff, patient confidentiality) with ability to make appropriate interventions based on law and policy
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Social Work experience in a jail or correctional setting
  • Knowledge of criminal justice system, state hospital system, forensic mental healthcare, Probation, Parole, and Department of Corrections

Department Description

·         Adult Correctional Mental Health (ACMH) is a satellite contract program of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The program provides mental health services to inmates incarcerated inside the two Sacramento County jails located in downtown Sacramento and in Elk Grove and Jail Based Competency Treatment (JBCT) and Early Access and Stabilization Services (EASS) to inmates found Incompetent to stand trial. The JBCT and EASS programs serve inmates charged with felony crimes and deemed incompetent to stand trial by the court (PC 1370).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work is performed with many interruptions during the day. Must be able to work effectively within a stressful, hazardous environment with rapidly changing priorities and deadlines. Willingness to work under an institutional “No Hostage Policy.” Must be able to pass and maintain the Sacramento Sheriff Department's Security Clearance. Ability to work in a highly stressful jail custody setting, with incarcerated inmates which may present hazardous conditions, including working in a potentially crowded, malodorous, and noisy environment, of a highly restrictive and confining nature. Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including holidays and weekends, as scheduled and assigned.

Special Requirements

  • This position is a critical position and subject to a background check and drug screen. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history, identity checks and drug screen.
