The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research on significant human health related problems where nonhuman primates are the animal models of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the Primate Center is also committed to its mission of teaching and service.

 

Job Summary

Under general supervision, provide technical, scientific, and organizational assistance to the operation of the laboratory research activities focused on regenerative medicine and gene therapy/somatic cell genome editing in translational models. Assist and support studies focusing on stem cell and gene therapy/gene editing. Work closely with the immediate supervisor and other laboratory personnel on a daily basis regarding all aspects of tasks and responsibilities; ensure procedures are performed in a timely and effective manner and according to laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs), and that samples and data are collected and stored in the required manner with high level of attention to detail; order and maintain supplies and coordinate inventory records and management with documentation according to good laboratory practice (GLP) standards; perform specialized procedures in molecular and cellular biology/regenerative medicine and gene therapy; maintain high-quality working relationships with other laboratory members and provide assistance to manager with essential oversight, training, and monitoring of daily activities of new staff and students; participate in research projects under direction of manager and PI; and follow UC, Campus, and Primate Center guidelines in performing tasks, and consult supervisor regularly on activities and documentation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position requires the performance of monotonous and repetitive tasks and procedures for long periods of time and operating and maintaining equipment, and safely lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
  • Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including gown, lab coats, gloves, masks, face shields, booties, and head covers.
  • Use and disposal of radioactive isotopes, hazardous materials and other environmental health and safety procedures.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level 2+ facilities where nonhuman primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous infectious agents such as SIV, Zika virus, cytomegalovirus, or Herpes B virus.
  • Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including gown, lab coats, gloves, masks, face shield, booties, and head cover.
  • Work with human and nonhuman primate cells and other specimens and chemical agents. 
  • Position may require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present. In such instances, employee will be required to wear protective clothing for personal protection from infectious agents.
  • Work irregular hours (early mornings, early evening, and/or weekends, as needed).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Master's degree in Biological Sciences or related scientific discipline such as Genetics and Molecular or Cellular Biology, and Microbiology with an emphasis on in vivo research.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated laboratory experience in the conduct of research in the areas of Genetics and Molecular Biology or Cellular Biology, and/or related fields involving translational models.
  • Demonstrated experience working with animals in a research environment (assisting in sterile techniques including tissue collections, collection of blood and other fluid specimens, scheduling activities, maintaining organizational calendars, and other animal-related procedures and techniques).
  • Experience in applied laboratory techniques such as immunohistochemistry, cell culture, real-time PCR, ELISA, and other techniques. Demonstrated experience in collection, preparation, culture, and analyzing of cells and tissues.
  • Demonstrated experience in applied laboratory techniques including cell culture and preparation of blood and tissue samples for various types of assays and analysis, including experience operating and maintaining standard laboratory equipment, experience working with microscopy, applying morphologic and molecular techniques, and with various assays.
  • Laboratory experience to write and follow written protocols with strict attention to detail. Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment. Experience with computer applications for transcribing raw data and entering and analyzing data and results.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Skills to perform sectioning of fixed and frozen histological specimens. Advanced knowledge of genetics, microbiology, sterile technique, and containment for BSL-2 and -3 infectious agents.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in effective communication and interpersonal skills to confer and relate professionally with others in a laboratory and research organization setting. Demonstrated computer skills and for transcribing raw data and entering and analyzing results. Experience to read, write, and strictly follow protocols.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Skills to multi-task, pay strict attention to detail, and perform multiple procedures in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills to confer and relate professionally with other laboratory personnel at all levels. Organizational skills to maintain chemical inventories, and preparation of media and solutions.
  • Skill to maintain records of laboratory purchases, and to store and organize in appropriate locations. Knowledge of chemicals and radioactivity and their safe handling procedures. Analytical skills to troubleshoot problems and follow protocols.
  • Skills to work independently under supervision by manager and PI to execute procedures with defined protocols and timelines. Capabilities and skills to professionally provide oversight and direction to junior personnel and trainees.
