Departmental Overview

As the authoritative resource and chief advocate for graduate education, the Graduate Division ensures the equitable administration of graduate academic policies across Berkeley's 14 schools and colleges. As the administrative arm of the Academic Senate's Graduate Council, we partner with the faculty and staff of each program and the deans of each school and college to maintain the world- renowned quality of Berkeley's graduate education.

As a central service center for the entire campus, the Graduate Division works to guide and assist students from the moment of admission, through the various milestones of their progress, to the completion of their degree requirements. We provide academic, non-academic, and professional support services that are vital to the everyday well-being and life-long successes of Berkeley master's, professional, and doctoral students.

Responsibilities

DEGREE PROPOSAL REVIEW:

  • Meets with proposers from across campus following submission of Intent to Propose a New Degree Survey to advise on proposal preparation and review process.
  • Coordinates review with the EVCP's Office on presentation to Council of Deans, including review and submission of proposal summary.
  • Provides initial review and assessment of draft SSGPDP degree proposals from units across campus on behalf of the Graduate Division, ensuring adherence to all relevant campus and systemwide policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates additional review with Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, relevant Associate Dean, and others within Graduate Division.
  • Facilitates coordination with units that contribute to the development of SSGPDP proposals (e.g., New Academic Ventures - Berkeley).
  • Works with proposers to finalize proposal for submission to the Academic Senate and conducts final review.
  • Establishes deadlines for above and tracks responses to ensure timely submission to the Academic Senate for review.
  • Tracks issues of concern that emerge in Academic Senate review and recommends modifications as needed.
  • If concerns require revision of policy, then raises those with the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs.
  • Develops tools to support proposal development as needed.

DEGREE PROGRAM REVIEW:

  • Tracks timing of newly-launched SSGPDPs to plan for mandatory three-year reviews.
  • Establishes deadlines for timely completion of reviews.
  • Gathers relevant review materials, advising as needed, and prepares participants for review meetings.
  • Assesses self-studies and final reports, identifying common themes across programs to refine review process.
  • Evaluates and coordinates with units to gather relevant metrics, identify needs, and propose solutions where appropriate.

ONGOING PROGRAM SUPPORT:

  • Maintains communication with SSGPDPs and advises as needed on processes to revise curriculum.
  • Coordinates as needed with Graduate Division units in responding to proposed modifications.
  • Gathers and analyzes metrics like admissions, degree completion, student satisfaction, program response to student feedback, and career outcomes to support program assessment.
  • Leverages work on SSGPDP program development, monitoring, and assessment to develop strategies, tools, and programs to support healthy program climates in professional master's degree programs. This includes establishing methods to help faculty and staff to identify students in distress and resources to help, supporting students and faculty who need to engage in difficult conversations, bolstering productive and mutually beneficial advising relationships, and identifying optimal ways to share best practices.

OTHER:

  • Partners with Office of Financial Planning and Analysis to coordinate Graduate Division review of annual SSGPDP fee proposals.
  • Acts as subject matter expert and primary advisor to Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs on long-range strategies for policy refinement and oversight as it relates to SSGPDPs.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and minimum of 5 years of relevant experience and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,800.00 - $122,000.00.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
