Hiring/Budgeted Salary or Hourly Range: The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $28.04-$31.56/hr.
Full Salary Range: $28.04 - $45.11/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Department Profile
The Earth Research Institute is an organized research unit whose mission is to support research and education in the sciences of our solid, fluid and living Earth. ERI fosters new multidisciplinary collaborations studying how Earth processes affect mankind and how mankind perturbs the Earth. Professor Alex Simms is the Interim Director of the unit. Seventy-three independent research groups and three centers conduct and administer their research using the facilities and resources of the Institute.

Brief Summary of Job Duties
Under the direction of one PhD student, the full-time Staff Research Assistant (SRA) will assist the Holden Laboratory at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management (UCSB), in collaboration with an international textiles company, in assessing microfiber emissions from conventional machine washing and drying of textiles. The SRA can expect to complete hands-on laboratory work related to the collection, quantification, and characterization of emitted microfibers. This will include conventional machine washing and drying of textiles, filtration of liquid effluent and air exhaust (respectively), measuring mass of recovered fibers using a bench-top balance, performing microscopy and spectroscopy on recovered microfibers, and associated data collection regarding quantity, type, and mass of recovered microfibers. The SRA can expect to plan and lead weekly or biweekly team meetings via video chat where they will present data and provide project updates, attend and participate in 1-3 client meetings via video chat where they will share updates, and to lead writing ofa brief final report for the client.
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled or have completed their master's degree
- Previous laboratory experience
- Previous experience using ATR-FTI
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience or interest in microplastics research.
- Ability to work independently to meet deadlines.
- Experience finding, analyzing, and interpreting peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

Duties % Time 1 Laboratory WorkFollow all operating procedures and QA/QC protocol. Quantify and characterize recovered microfibers using stereomicroscopy. Measure masses of various samples using a bench-top laboratory balance. Chemically identify textiles and emitted microfibers using a benchtop ATRFTIR at the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL at UCSB) and associated software.
75% 2 Data EntryRecord data regarding wash water and dryer air temperature, wash and dry cycle durations, and microfiber quantity and mass in spreadsheet form.
10% 3 Equipment ManagementClean and maintain associated equipment.Operate a conventional washing machine and dryer at Bren Hall (UCSB). Filter microfibers out of washing machine liquid effluent and dryer air exhaust
10% 4 Training/CommunicationInitiate and complete training on ATR-FTIR at MRL at UCSB, manage time and budget associated with tool recharge, and manage and interpret data using associated software and Google Drive.Plan and lead weekly or biweekly team meetings via video chat.
