ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Science Division at Bellevue College is organized into four programs: Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Computer Science / Engineering. The Physics Department is included in the Physical Sciences Program and currently consists of four full-time faculty and eight quarterly contracted adjunct faculty. More than sixty five sections of physics, including both lecture-based and inquiry-based introductory courses, algebra- and calculus-based college physics sequences, and a modern physics course, are offered annually. Physics instruction is supported by a comprehensive collection of laboratory and demonstration apparatus and laboratory support staff. The members of the Physics Department are an active and eclectic group with a variety of research backgrounds, who share a common commitment to excellence in teaching. ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR BASE RATE:
A 6 credits lecture/lab Physics class is compensated at $5,343.73
This is a temporary part-time faculty position, typically assigned as-needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.
Teach physics courses spanning the physics department offerings as assigned in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Current offerings include the two main introductory physics sequences (algebra-based and calculus-based), a modern physics course, an inquiry-based course to prepare students for the introductory sequences, an inquiry-based course in support of information technology, an inquiry-based course in support of the visual and performing arts, and an introductory course for arts and humanities majors.
Part-time physics faculty teach one or a combination of physics courses at all levels of the curriculum consistent with their experience, provide office hours, and participate in departmental meetings in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
At this time we are especially interested in instructors experienced with introductory mechanics or electricity and magnetism for the algebra based or calculus based sequence.
- A Master's Degree in Physics or a Baccalaureate degree in Physics and a Master's in a closely related discipline from an accredited institution
- Experience teaching Physics at college level
- Ability to relate to students and staff of varied ethnicity, age, background and ability, and a commitment to achieving educational success in a culturally diverse environment
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Experience teaching in community college setting
- Experience designing and constructing effective learning activities
- Evidence of efforts to improve student success in an open-enrollment institution
- One or more of the following:
- Experience and continuing engagement in discovering ways to make explicit the connections between physical theory and the physical world as experienced by students
- Knowledge of current physics education research and applications of research findings
- Related professional experience or activity
