The Cancer Care Center Cancer Registrar demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation. This individual provides technical duties to accession, abstract, follow-up, analysis and reporting for reportable cancer related diagnoses. This individual is responsible for assuring the confidentiality, accuracy and timeliness of all cancer related health information encountered. Primary patient contact is only social.

Contributes to Organizational success targets for patient satisfaction.

Assure all communications via telephone or in person or written are timely, tactful, effective, positive, and professional.

Formulates and uses effective working relationships with all members of the CCC Department, physicians, external customers, committees, patients and other staff members encountered.

Must meet or exceed standards for effective communication with individuals or entities internally and/or externally.

Effective working relationships include; cancer registry staff, cancer care committee members and department, administration, American College of Surgeons (ACoS) – Commission on Cancer CoC) representatives, National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), Michigan Cancer Surveillance Program (MCSP) field representatives, physicians / physician office staff, Metriq software vendor, other facilities, external customers, and patients.

Continued knowledge of all reporting resources required to accession, abstract (within six months) for reportable cancer diagnoses that are diagnosed and/or treated at Covenant Healthcare.

Continued ongoing learning and use of additional references to assure accuracy in decision making.

Participate in Cancer Registry meetings with staff and manager and registry staff meetings to effectively discuss, resolve or interpret complicated registry functions to maintain consistency and continuity.

Occasional participation in additional subcommittee meetings

Flexible to travel to other buildings, physician offices or other locations as required.

This also includes occasional adjustment of work hours to accommodate work needs.

Shares knowledge with others, during training of new staff and acts as a resource to others.

Identify and prepare cases monthly for physician QA review for accuracy of registry data as required by ACoS-CoC standards

Cancer/Tumor & GYN Conferences – Rotate schedule with other registrars to attend meetings and keep detailed records in regards to each case presented.

Cancer Committee – attend and provide input for agendas, proof minutes, etc. as needed.

Participate in annual review and revision of Cancer Registry and Cancer Program policies and procedures.

Participate as needed in assistance with CME application and other requirements for Cancer/Tumor and Breast conferences as required by CMU

Assist in achieving departmental and area specific goals

Maintains professional credentials.

Supports cancer screening events, education sessions and other programs offered to the community. May also volunteer at events.

Submit required data to the State, NCDB or other entities as required.

Maintains quality control plan for monitor case finding, data collection, accuracy and timeliness of information and reporting.

Assure that all legal requirements, including Federal (HIPAA) and State regulations are met.

Demonstrates an awareness of legal/confidentiality issues and adheres to all HIPAA Privacy and Security, and Department Policies and Procedures.

Participates in development and attainment of departmental and workgroup goals.

Perform other duties as assigned.



Other information:


Required – Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), certification or eligible status.

Associates degree required. RHIT or RHIA or an RN with cancer registry (CTR)

Required: Valid Michigan Drivers License

Preferred previous work experience in a cancer registry, a hospital coder or quality improvement department.

Must be able to tolerate working under stress, limited time constraints and with frequent interruptions and deadlines.



Proficient Computer skills.

Knowledge of cancer registry software Metriq system

Knowledge of standard office equipment.

Demonstrates effective communication methods and skills, both verbally and in writing.

Demonstrates strong organizational skills/priority setting skills to complete work timely and accurately while juggling many tasks.

Practices effective problem identification and resolution skills as a method of sound decision making.

Demonstrates interpersonal skills required to work with many other people and personalities.

Requires the ability to use sound judgment, based upon the latest guidelines, federal and state statutes and regulations, as well as hospital and departmental policies

Continued growth in many areas.

Ability to sit and look at computer screen for long periods of time.

To use a computer, mouse, learn different software applications and references required to complete the job tasks.

Be flexible to adjust assignments as priorities change.
