The Sr. IT Data Architect will provide thought leadership on how IT can enable Ulta to provide market differentiation and will need to be an innovative thinker who is able to envision how technology can be leveraged to solve complex business problems. This individual will work closely with cross functional business and IT teams in a highly collaborative, dynamic, and fast paced environment to architect well-designed solutions that lower business and IT risk, increase reuse and lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).




  • System Software: Evaluates new system software, reviews system software updates and identifies those that merit action. Ensures that system software is tailored to facilitate the achievement of service objectives. Plans the installation and testing of new versions of system software. Investigates and coordinates the resolution of potential and actual service problems. Ensures that operational documentation for system software is fit for purpose and current. Advises on the correct and effective use of system software.
  • Systems Design: Manages the system design practice within enterprise architecture. Influences models for the development of new technology applications. Develops effective implementation and procurement strategies, consistent with business needs. Ensures adherence to relevant technical strategies, policies, standards and practices (including security).
  • Solution Architecture: Leads the development of architectures for complex systems, ensuring consistency with specified requirements agreed with both external and internal customers. Oversees the balance between functional, service quality and systems management requirements within a significant area of the organization. Establishes policy and strategy for the selection of systems architecture components, and co-ordinates design activities, promoting the discipline to ensure consistency. Ensures that appropriate standards (corporate, industry, national and international) are adhered to. Within a business change program, manages the target design, policies and standards, working proactively to maintain a stable, viable architecture and ensure consistency of design across projects within the program.
  • Relationship Management: Develops long-term, strategic relationships with senior stakeholders. Is a single point of contact and facilitates access to colleagues and subject matter experts.  Maintains a strong understanding of clients' industry and business, assists clients in the formation of IT strategies, and acts to ensure that they are offered solutions and services aligned to these strategies.  Negotiates at senior level on technical and commercial issues.  Influences the development and enhancement of services, products and systems, and oversees the management and planning of business opportunities.
  • Business Risk Management: Plans and manages the implementation of organization-wide processes and procedures, tools and techniques for the identification, assessment, and management of risk inherent in the operation of business processes and of potential risks arising from planned change.
  • Innovation: Manages, monitors, and seeks opportunities, new methods, trends, capabilities and products to the advancement of the organization. Clearly articulates, and formally reports potential benefits from both structural and incremental change. Promotes and motivates colleagues to share creative ideas and learn from failures.
  • Research: Develops research goals and builds on and refines appropriate outline ideas for the evaluation, development, demonstration and implementation of research. Evaluates work carried out and may contribute significant sections of material of publication quality. Leads research plans and identifies appropriate opportunities for publication and dissemination of research findings. Where necessary, designs data collection tools and techniques for both qualitative and quantitative data.
  • IT Governance: Develops staffing structures to support the work of the governing authority (board, trustees, etc.) and proper relationships between the organization and external parties. Leads the review of management processes (and decisions) and confirms that they are compliant with the organization's strategy for corporate governance of information. Manages relevant standards and the principles embedded within them. Evaluates new business proposals and provides specialist advice on compliance issues. Coordinates with relevant regulatory authorities. Develops policy and standards for compliance with relevant legislation.
  • IT Strategy & Planning: Develops policies and standards and guidelines for how the organization conducts IT strategy development and planning. Leads and manages the creation or review of an IT strategy which meets the requirements of the business. Develops, communicates, implements and reviews the processes which ensure that the strategic management of IT is embedded in the management and operational plans of the organization.
  • Information Management: Develops and communicates the organization's strategy for managing information, ensuring that uniformly recognized and accepted data definitions are developed and applied throughout the organization. Ensures that the business processes and information required to support the organization are defined and devises appropriate standards, processes and data architectures. Evaluates the impact of any relevant statutory, internal or external regulations on the organization's use of information and develops strategies for compliance. Coordinates information resources to support digital services and analytics. Develops systems and controls to measure performance, and manage risk.



  • Assist with the definition and evolution of the enterprise data architecture function including the roadmaps, methodology, best practices, standards, policies and patterns and governance in the data domain.
  • Data Architecture – data models, data integration, data warehousing, business intelligence, data quality, data security, information delivery and data governance.
  • Technical Architecture – Data infrastructure platforms and technologies.
  • Consult on projects and ensure that data and technology aspects of the solution architecture are driven by enterprise architecture guidelines, best practices and strategic roadmaps.
  • Ensure that solutions meet all legal, security, risk, internal controls, accounting standards and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Produce solution cost and resource estimates based on business requirements and statements of work.
  • The Data Architect defines data strategy, enterprise data platform architecture, and key architectural components of the enterprise data lake ecosystem supporting enterprise-wide analytics, AI/ML and Business Intelligence. These include the enterprise data platform on Google cloud, data pipelines, data governance, data catalog, and the data quality.
  • Design conceptual and logical data models, within a complete functional and technical architecture. 
  • Partners with other architects from the cloud, infrastructure, security and other domain experts to define data platform technical strategy, roadmap and architecture. 
  • Oversee the large enterprise data initiatives including migration of data from legacy systems to new solutions.
  • Assess data platform implementation procedures to ensure they comply with internal and external regulations.
  • Performing third-party vendor assessments and leading proof-of-concept initiatives
  • Staying current with industry trends, vendor product offerings and emerging data solutions in use across the industry; continuously learning new data technologies



  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field, or applicable work experience
  • 15+ years of overall experience in information technology including architecture, design and development
  • 5+ years demonstrated leadership experience as senior data architect leading several enterprise data initiatives is required
  • Experience in designing, building and operationalizing large-scale enterprise data solutions and applications on-prem and cloud preferably in GCP.
  • Experience with multi cloud-based data architecture, data ingestion, curation and self-service reporting frameworks
  • Have experience architecting enterprise event-based sourcing and event streaming solutions, specifically with technologies like Kafka, Spark and GCP Pub/Sub.
  • Expertise in data centric security architecture concepts and open standards
  • Solid understanding of retail industry business and IT processes and systems.
  • Expertise in architecting and developing data warehouse solutions, for enterprise reporting and analytics applications
  • Experience with Master Data Management, Metadata Management, Enterprise Data Catalogs
  • Knowledge of Data Science tools such as GCP AI Platform, Dataiku, etc., a plus
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt quickly to change.
