Description

The UC San Diego Structural Engineering Department is currently comprised of approximately 25 faculty, 5 researchers, 500 undergraduate students, 150 graduate students, and 33 staff members. The Structural Engineering Department offers BS, MS and PhD degrees with specializations in the areas of civil structures, geotechnical engineering, computational mechanics, aerospace structures, and structural health monitoring/nondestructive evaluation. The department is home to the world-class Charles Lee Powell Structural Engineering Laboratories, Caltrans Seismic Response Modification Device (SRMD), and the Englekirk Structural Engineering Center (ESEC). Through these facilities, our faculty and researchers have access to some of the most innovative and productive research infrastructure in the world.

Under the supervision of the Englekirk Structural Engineering Center (ESEC) Project Scientist, serve as the Laboratory Staff Manager for the ESEC testing facility including the 6-DOF Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table (LHPOST6). Lead a team of technical support staff of a structural engineering and seismic testing research laboratory to implement research objectives. Responsible for the operation, development, design, instrumentation and coordination of all aspects of structural testing to support research and training for faculty, staff, and student researchers in the Structural Engineering Department and the surrounding community. This includes, but is not limited to, operation of the servo-hydraulic shake table and data acquisition systems, using specialized engineering design methods to assist the design of test setups, performing shakedown testing, assist in calibration and validation of testing equipment to allow qualification testing and performance characterization of structural systems and components and be responsible for the ISO 17025 facility accreditation.

Using specialized engineering knowledge, expertise and methods, incumbent will direct, supervise, and provide complex expertise and engineering support for all laboratory technical support staff, researchers, and contractors involved with the projects. Represent the Center and collaborators in internal efforts, such as project and safety management. Assist in the preparation of technical reports representing the results and interpretation of the conducted research and experimental work.

Exposure to occasional loud noises, vibrations, heat, dust, and allergens due to construction activities while conducting materials and structural testing.

  • Must be willing to work outside of regular working hours (evenings & weekends ) as required in support of research projects.


Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge associated with the planning, development, and fabrication of engineering systems. Advance and specialized knowledge and experience with hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical aspects of servo-controlled closed loop hydraulic systems and data acquisition/instrumentation systems.

  • Advanced knowledge of specialized design work as well as the overall field. Extensive experience in structural engineering, construction safety, and in large-scale testing, including the design and analysis for both static and dynamic loading of timber, reinforced concrete, reinforced masonry and structural steel. Ability to read high end complex plans and specifications for the design and modification of existing lab space.

  • Strong creativity and problem solving abilities to apply principles, practices and procedures within discipline to complete difficult assignments. Demonstrated knowledge, ability, and experience in complex engineering planning, development. design, and construction of large-scale structural test systems.

  • Strong project management skills needed to assume responsibility for accomplishment of research objectives.

  • Proven communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner. Ability to write technical reports, estimate time and materials required to perform tasks, strong communication skills using independent judgement, making decisions and solving complex problems.

  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills. Experience working with staff and researchers at various professional and academic levels, including professional engineer, technical support staff, faculty, postgraduate researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, while assuming a supervisory role.

  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner; readily assess complex challenges and barriers and recommend effective resolutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and influence others. Strong leadership skills and specialized knowledge and experience in managing a complex structural testing laboratory and supervision of laboratory personnel.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading a team of scientists and technical support staff in collaboration with otherprincipal investigators.

  • College graduate and educational level of at least a M.Sc. degree or higher in an engineering field or five years of engineering experience in managing, leading, designing, planning, development and construction in a complex structural engineering testing site.
