Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. Extension offers more than 2,000 courses per year in a variety of subjects both online and in the classroom. Extension's administrative departments and units include student records (transcripts), registration, scheduling, international student services, facilities, financial services, and the cashier's office. In addition to the main Berkeley center, it has responsibility for the maintenance and operation of regional centers in San Francisco (Spear Street), and Belmont and other leased facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area.  The Academic Design Program Manager will join the Custom Programs team. 


Responsibilities
  • Develops scope of work, budgets, and reports for project requirements. Manages the co-creative academic design process with external partners and internal stakeholders. Provides guidance and support in the creation of the complete documentation necessary for program design and approval, including market research, academic curriculum and course descriptions, policy, budget and financial plan.
  • Provides analyses for complex budget, financial, academic, data, systems and resource projects working directly with all levels of managers. In charge of updating of financial planning and business modeling tools and templates in collaboration with Program Director and Financial Services. Manages the training of internal staff on financial tools and templates. Executes financial analysis and budget projections for academic projects, and manages trainings for internal staff.
  • Prepares directives, regulations, technical guidance, and other instructions for issuance to stakeholders. Manages the development of academic design tools and templates in collaboration with Director. Manages the training of internal stakeholders. Manages the continuous improvement of tools, templates as well as the complete academic design process based on regular assessment of efficiency and tacking of issues.
  • Coordinates efforts with a variety of external and internal contacts; researches organizational structures, policies and procedures and summarizes best practices in field. Provides technical guidance and quality assessment.] Manages the communication and relation with external partners who contract with the department to produce new customized programs. Ensures application of quality standards in the design of academic offerings in collaboration with external partners.
  • Researches and summarizes best practices in field. Supports academic design projects by planning and executing benchmarks of competitive academic offerings, such as programs and courses. In addition, performs best practice benchmarks across various disciplines, industries or locations. Analyses benchmarks and provides recommendations to inform the strategic development of academic design projects.
  • Researches, monitors and analyzes regulations, legislation, research literature and UC policies for impact on the organization or initiative. Provides recommendations to avoid conflicts of academic projects with policy.
  • Conducts post-implementation analysis to determine the need for further enhancements, finer distinctions and / or additional process / policy components. Participates in the management of the evaluation process and analysis, in conjuncture with Program Manager. Supports the development of metrics to analyze and improve academic program offerings.
  • Develops proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the organization or initiative. Analyses the academic design process and its efficiency at every step, and regularly provides recommendations for improvement.
  • Performs ad hoc, analytical studies on a wide variety of policies, programs and issues which are complex in nature. Proposes recommendations to Director for the strategic development of academic innovations, such as new program or course designs as well as novel formats of academic content delivery.
  • Researches and analyzes processes and procedures, summarizes findings, policies and organizational structures in order to develop and / or implement changes and to provide consultative services to department administrators, partners and external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.  Analytical / problem-solving skills.   
  • Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.   Strong policy analysis techniques.   
  • Thorough knowledge of basic concepts, principles, and procedures of building and maintaining effective relations with internal and external, national and international constituencies.
  • Advanced intercultural communication skills to effectively  manage relations with staff, agents and representatives of institutional or corporate partners.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to gain knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
