Description

The Computational Research Division at Berkeley Lab is hiring for a Postdoctoral Scientist in Performance Engineering and High Performance Computing. This position will conduct fundamental and applied research in performance modeling of scientific computing running on pre-exascale multicore and accelerator-based supercomputers.


What You Will Do:

  • Develop models to capture the key performance facets to scientific computing, including thread- and instruction-parallel algorithms running on current and future multicore and accelerator supercomputers.

  • Work with cross-disciplinary teams to improve algorithm performance by taking advantage of the latest computer architecture capabilities.

  • Publish and represent research results in high-impact journals and top conferences in the areas of parallel computing and performance optimization.


What is Required:

  • PhD degree within the last 3 years in Computer Science, Computational Sciences, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field.

  • In-depth knowledge of multicore and GPU-accelerated architectures.

  • Proficiency in C and/or C++ programming language.

  • Proficiency in one or more of the parallel libraries/languages such as MPI, OpenMP, CUDA.

  • Ability to analyze algorithms and software, and suggest novel approaches for performance.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Software engineering tools such as make ang git.

  • Understanding of repeatable scientific approach to algorithm and performance optimization.

  • One or more of the popular scripting languages such as Python, Julia, or R.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • This position will be remote initially, but limited to individuals residing in the United States tentatively until September 2021 due to COVID-19. Once the Bay Area shelter-in-place restrictions are lifted, work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
