Job Summary

Under the direction of the Associate Director/Revenue Manager, the Coder will be responsible for front-end billing functions from procedural & diagnosis coding and charge entry to contacting physicians for documentation tracking and updating. Other duties may include assisting other Departments as needed/assigned.

Coder must be flexible and adept at juggling multiple tasks with competing priorities. Duties include researching billing/coding questions, working the billing work queues with various billing staff, training and auditing front and back-end billing processes and identifying opportunities for improvement.


Required Qualifications
  • Certified Professional Coder in good standing with AAPC or AHIMA
  • AA degree; or six months related work experience & education
  • Fundamental understanding of coding (CPT and ICD-10) and documentation requirements (for both billing and compliance), and the billing submission process
  • Able to pass all classes related to the UCSF Medical Center's computer systems as well as related UCSF coding and billing applications; may include off-site billing systems from partner hospitals
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior clinical experience
  • Strong computer skills; proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Detail-oriented and have experience working with large data
  • Finance or accounting experience
  • Great problem solving skills, independent and have a “can do attitude”

Licensure/Certification
  • Certified Professional Coder in good standing with AAPC or AHIMA

Work Environment

  • Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.
  • Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility.
  • Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.
  • Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.
  • Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.
