Position Summary  

As a part-time nursing instructor, you will demonstrate commitment to student success through teaching and learning excellence, including directing student learning in assigned courses, and establishing and assessing student learning outcomes. You will maintain current knowledge and skills in area of assignment; building collaborative relationships within the BC community and the community at large; and fostering a positive, caring learning environment in which diversity and pluralism are valued. You will perform duties and functions under the direction of the Program Chair and will be directly responsible to the Nursing Dean in Health Sciences, Education & Wellness Institute.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. 

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $5,716.52 - $6,968.62. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter. 

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department  

The Health Sciences, Education and Wellness Institute (HSEWI) of Bellevue College strives for excellence through our highly competent faculty and staff as well as through our enriched curriculum. HSEWI is composed of fourteen unique programs that address critical workforce needs in the region and nation. Each program focuses on providing education and training for professions in healthcare, education, and wellness.

Essential Functions  

Nursing faculty perform duties and responsibilities under the general direction of the Program Chair and are responsible primarily to the Nursing Dean in the Health Sciences, Education & Wellness Institute (HSEWI) division.

 The faculty is responsible for:

  • Fostering a positive, caring, equitable learning environment where differences and pluralism are valued, and all students have opportunities to be successful learners
  • Teaching face-to-face and hybrid classes (combination of face-to-face and online) in the classroom, nursing lab, and clinical settings.
  • Working closely with the nursing faculty team to align course delivery of learning strategies and materials.
  • Assessing student-learning outcomes.
  • Providing culturally responsive advising, such as navigating obstacles that underrepresented and historically marginalized student populations may experience in college (e.g. students with disabilities, students of color, first generation college students, LBGTQia students, Veterans, 2nd language learners, etc.) 
  • Participating in the life and culture of the department, division, and college, including the college-wide effort to dismantle barriers that can impact underrepresented and historically marginalized student populations 
  • Maintaining current knowledge and skills in areas of assignment.
  • Engaging in self-reflection and self-evaluation.
  • Building collaborative relationships between Bellevue College (BC) and health care communities.
     
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from accredited institution who is currently enrolled in a master's or higher degree in nursing or related field.
  • Current Washington State RN license or be eligible for licensure
  • Basic Life Support Certification from American Heart association and updated TB and other immunizations mandated by our clinical partners
  • An advocate for pluralism with a teaching philosophy appropriate for a diverse (multicultural, multi-ability, etc.) classroom
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Master's degree in Nursing or related field from an accredited institution
  • Certification in clinical specialty
  • Background/prior experience that shows understanding of concepts related to student-centered teaching and learning theory, curriculum development, and assessment of learning outcomes 
  • Experience in integrating diversity, pluralism, and inclusion into teaching and learning, or equivalent transferable skills to do so
  • Experience and/or education for developing nursing program curriculum
  • Knowledge/experience working with a variety of teaching modalities and delivery methods, including simulation, flipped classes, online, and hybrid courses 
  • History of life-long learning and professional development in nursing practice, quality care, and current health care issues 
  • Experience in addressing disproportionate impact and equity issues within an institution
  • Active involvement in community and professional organizations 
  • Basic computer literacy skills and knowledge of learning management systems
